From Preface: "In the five years that have passed since the first edition of Jazz: New Orleans, there have been many changes in the musical life of the city, and there has also come to light considerable new material on both the musicians and the music they played. This second edition includes new information on a number of musicians, additional biographies, historical material which has only recently come to light, as well as a discussion of some of the newest groups of recordings from New Orleans. Of particular interest is the material from the 1919 New York Dramatic Mirror, included in an appendix, which provides some new source material on the beginnings of jazz in the city. As in the first edition there has not been an effort made to follow the careers of the musicians who left New Orleans and lived permanently elsewhere. The book is intended primarily as a study of the New Orleans musical environment and these musicians, although they often continued to influence New Orleans jazz through their recordings, were no longer part of the local scene...."
