Life for widowed antiques dealer Lilly Kaiser has been tranquil until a mysterious elderly man enters her shop and gives her an antique violin, saying that it belongs to her. She immediately calls her young friend Rose Gallway, a musicologist and talented violinist. The two decide to trace the provenance of the instrument, and their investigation takes them all the way to Sumatra. There, Rose meets Paul and the two have a brief relationship. She could never have imagined how this fleeting affair would greatly impact her life from then on.
