Each player has 16 men arranged as follows: First, make sure that there is dark square at each players left hand near corner. nearest row ( rank ); castle, knight, bishop, king, queen, bishop, knight, castle. the queen will always be placed on her color ( black queen black square ); (white queen light square). next row ; 8 pawns. the object of the game is to capture the opponents king. a move that threatens the kind is called 'check' and if the king being attacked cannot defend itself or neutralize the attack, he will be in 'checkmate'. when a player moves one of his/her men so that the square upon which the enemy king is standing is controlled by that man, the attacking player must announce: ' CHECK '. if the king cannot move but can't be captured, a 'stalemate' is called. nobody wins. the king may move in any direction at all, one space at a time. he may not move into 'check' however. the king may move 2 space only once in any game and that is when he 'castle'. kings may not castle when in check, after he has moved, or when the rook ( Castle) has been moved. also, neither piece may move over any spaces that are 'attacked' by the enemy. the queen may move in any direction and travel any number of spaces. this piece combines the power of the rook and bishop. the queen may travel in only one direction at a time. the rook (castle) may move either forward or backward or side to side. it can move to any space on the rank or file on which it is placed. the bishop may move diagonally forward or backward any number of spaces, one direction at a time. Bishops always stay on the same coloured square- if he starts on a dark square, he always travels on the dark squares. the knight is the only piece that can jump over another piece. in one move it travels two spaces in any direction, the one square at a right angle to that line. whenever a knight moves, it will always land on a space of a different colour. the pawn may move in a straight line forward.
