Heritage Languages in America: Preserving a National Resource (Language in Education, 96)

As a result of both immigration and birth patterns, the number of individuals in the United States who speak a language other than English is increasing dramatically. At the same time, there are tremendous needs in all areas of the workforce for individuals with proficiency in languages other than English. This book describes the population of heritage language speakers in the United States and outlines what needs to be done to help them develop a high level of proficiency in their heritage language for use in academic and professional arenas. The needs identified include materials, instructional strategies, and assessment tools specifically designed for heritage language speakers, to be used in the context of high-quality heritage language programs that move smoothly and sequentially from early elementary through college levels. Other needs include teacher recruitment and training, and funding to develop and maintain good programs. Addressing these challenges will demand the attention and effort of all who are involved in language education, research, and policy formation.
