The first issue of Honolulu magazine appeared in July 1966. The editors were Cynthia and David Eyre, and their editorial budget was $250 an issue. From the Eyres through editors Dave Pellegrin, Brian Nicol, and John Heckathorn, Honolulu has been the only general interest magazine published in Hawai'i to carry Hawaiian history on a regular basis, and for that reason it counts many of the best writers of Hawaiian history among its contributors. Bob Dye has selected twenty-nine articles appearing in issues of Honolulu as early as 1979. The articles range from the Islands' volcanic beginnings to the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the first days of World War II.The book will be of interest to current readers of Honolulu magazine, those new to the Islands, and students from high school through college.
