When Arsene Wenger brought Robert Pires to Arsenal in summer 2000, he was a good footballer on the cusp of greatness. After a slow first season, his second was astonishing. He was key a player in Arsenal's double-winning year until serious injury curtailed the glorious performances that won him the "Football Writers' Player of the Year" award, putting an end to his World Cup dreams.
