It is reduced in the body to tetrahydrofolate, which is a coenzyme for various metabolic processes. Folic acid is well-absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It was found to be safe in breast-feeding where a healthy woman excretes folic acid into the breast milk enough to fulfil infant requirements.
