Every Way Possible: 125 Years of the Indianapolis Museum of Art

From its beginning in the late 19th century as a small group of fine art advocates to its status in the early 21st century as one of the largest general art museums in the country, the Indianapolis Museum of Art has followed a path that has sometimes been straight and narrow, sometimes broad and circuitous, but rarely uneventful. Its trajectory has been guided by high-minded idealists and deep-pocketed realists, its operations governed by cheery optimists and clear-eyed pragmatists, often at the same time. And as with any enduring institution, there have been times of triumph and times of turmoil, periods of achievement and of disappointment, occasions to remember and moments to forget. Regardless of the circumstances, there have always been individuals directors, board members, trustees, benefactors, volunteers, curators, conservators, educators and other staff members who have remained focused on the works of art that are the IMA s raison d être. This book tells their stories. Major art acquisitions and collections are featured, and the book includes many archival photographs, as well as photographs of works in the collection.
