Europe is quite justifiably renowned for its myriad castles and palaces and now many of them have taken on a new lease of life - as hotels. Some are state-owned, some are family-owned, but, by accepting paying guests, many have been saved from neglect and their history preserved. This book contains a selection of what, in the author's opinion, are the best and most historic places to stay, in countries that are easily visited. The choice has been made from personal knowledge and that of the author's colleagues. Although historic links are priority, cuisine, ambience and service have been taken into consideration.
