Esbury - A Notched Display Font

ABOUT Esbury is a modern, notched display font inspired by gritty vintage tattoo typography and elegant European hotel signage. It's a meshing of two seemingly different approaches to create an entirely new style. The vintage tattoo influence comes across in a few ways. The notches in each letterform are derivative of the cross hatches typically seen in old-school sailor tattoos. Instead of the cross hatches protruding, they are notched out of each character, creating negative space. Deliberately placed curves are also injected into specific characters, like the E, to mimic the curled serifs you typically see in tattoo typography. The European influence simply comes across through sophistication and balance. Each letterform is designed around the same geometric shape to create unity. And slab serifs add a traditional flair to help offset the modern silhouette of the characters.
