Erich Mendelsohn Architectural Drawings

The tendency to think of Mendelsohn as a somewhat peripheral figure makes one unprepared for the impact of ''Erich Mendelsohn: Architectural Drawings,'' a superb exhibition of several hundred of the architect's original drawings that opened earlier this month at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, 2 East 91st Street, where it will run through Jan. 8, 1989. The exhibition, which also includes vintage photographs of Mendelsohn's work, is a revelation: suddenly Mendelsohn seems not secondary at all, but critical to the development of 20th-century architecture.
