From Introduction: The uses of California plants have heretofore been scattered in journals and various publications not usually available to the general public. This book expands on the existing sources and tells about both aboriginal and modern uses of more than 220 different species of plants found in California. recipes are given where applicable. I have written t his book for the person with no knowledge of botany, and it is meant to be useful to the average student, city dweller, backpacker, camper, vegetarian, and survival instructor--be they trained in botany or not. For this reason, the plants are arranged by habitat, and within each habitat they are listed alphabetically by the most frequently used common name.
