Iodine is a mineral that the body needs for maintaining proper thyroid function and cell metabolism. Although pink Himalayan salt may naturally contain some iodine, it most likely contains less iodine than iodized salt.
The way salt is iodized is usually very simple and involves the addition of an iodine-containing mineral salt (like potassium iodide) to the sodium chloride. Sea salt, kosher salt, and regular table salt can all be purchased in iodized or non-iodized versions.
Although sea salt does contain iodine, it generally provides less iodine than table salt, according to the American Heart Association. This is because many, but not all, varieties of regular table salt are iodized -- meaning extra iodine is added during processing.
