The author traces the early works on sports in America, from "The Compleat System of Fencing," the earliest one he was able to identify, to the demise of "Turf Register" magazine in 1844. This period represents a time when the developing nation was still strongly under the influence of its mother-country in so far as writing on sports subjects was concerned, and it is for this reason that this period lends itself to treatment as an entity.
