A farmhouse replicated several times, with slight variations, across a valley. Three small graves have been dug in the front garden, the one in the middle still empty. A woman in a wheelchair rummages through a pile of boxes while her husband wanders around the ruins of old buildings, wondering where the animals have disappeared. A young girl called 'The Barren Land' behind her back dreams of love, while an aging schoolmaster is about to end his life. At the entrance to the muddy driveway, a car pulls up and stops in front of the house like a silver bullet pulsating under the heat.
