Rosser - who had risen to prominence as soldiers on opposite sides of the Civil War. They had been classmates and friends at West Point. In the autumn of 1864 they were in a pitched battle over several days. Custer prevaliled on the fourth day. After the Civil War, Rosser was a big supporter of Custer in campaigns in the West.
