Deadly Attraction is more of Seattle's best noir set in mid-1941. Novel number five in the Alan Stewart and Vera Deward series features Seattle's first female private detective as part of this red hot duo who assist the police department on cases where it either has official conflicts of interest or otherwise requires their special skills. The idyllic calm of Seattle's Green Lake is shattered when a young carpenter stumbles upon a partially-clothed starlet's body. The victim, Audrey Lockhart, a beautiful young woman with an East Coast education and visions of Hollywood in her eyes, a reputation for making male friends too easily, as well as possessing a fiery nature, also happens to be the niece of the King County Commisioner, who once had been a Seattle Police detective who Chief of Detective Mike Ketchum tried to run off the force and put in jail. Descending into the depths of depravity, they fight their way through gamblind dens, the Chinese underground, and the unsavory Seattle Waterfront, uncovery the fact that sometimes, blood is thicker than water. A new high for Low! With Deadly Attraction, Neil Low offers up another fine mystery with master sleuths Vera Deward and Alan Stewart scoping out corrupt, WWII era Seattle. Each successive chapter draws a bead on the reader, fires round after round of adrenaline-packed action and mystique, and delivers a final kill shot with unbearable, cliffhanging suspense. Low's mastery of prose and detecive-like attention to detail makes this deadly yarn a unique addition to the hard-boiled genre. No other author could ever write this book quite like Low does.
