In this short treatise, the young Plutarch (46-125 AD) worries about the weight of superstition on his contemporaries. Isn't she a threat to the Greek spirit? If atheism is condemned and fought, the same does not apply to false beliefs, born from misguided conceptions of the gods or inherited from foreign cults. Criticizing with force and humor the obscurantism of the devotees, Plutarch advocates a refined and enlightened piety, founded on a “lucid faith in spirit and in truth” which has reason for another name.
