Dantons Death
Description
Written in 1835, Danton's Death is a landmark in the history of modern drama. Though neglected and underperformed for many years, this ironic and fatalistic study of Danton and the French Revolution was to influence a number of 20th century writers, notably Brecht, and has become an established part of the repertoire of modern theatre companies. This version by Howard Brenton was commissioned and first performed by the National Theatre following their successful production of Brenton's translation of Brecht's Galileo. Georg Buchner was born in 1813. In 1835, in five weeks, he secretly worte Dantons Tod (Danton's Death) a tragedy depicting Danton's disillusionment with the French Revolution.
