Charles County Plates: Favorite Dishes from The Charles County Garden Club is published with love by The Charles County Garden Club. Since 1938, our club’s members have enjoyed meeting with each other to learn, laugh, and improve Charles County, Maryland through various horticultural and outreach projects.In addition to some of our favorite recipes, this book features line drawings of many historic sites and significant landmarks in Charles County. These are the houses, churches, and structures that dot the landscape we enjoy and see changing day by day. Over the years, The Charles County Garden Club has produced ceramic plates featuring many of the images depicted in this book. Some are rare or out of circulation, but all are a familiar sight at a family gathering, dinner party, or luncheon buffet.Just as any community cookbook gives hints about its contributors, ours offers a snapshot of place and time and a window into the area’s cultural history. Some of the recipes are original to our region; others we’ve imported. The book is not complete and isn’t intended to be. Instead, it’s a glimpse of us: the members of The Charles County Garden Club, our relatives, our friends, our neighbors, and others we’ve been fortunate enough to know through the years.We hope you enjoy reading and using this volume as much as we have delighted in providing you with a picture of our home—a home that is very different from the view you might see while making your way between Baltimore, Maryland and Richmond, Virginia on any given day.
