Treating Southern Catholicism in functional and symbolic terms and relating it to the culture of the region, this study indeed represents a pioneering effort, a comprehensive examination of what it was like to be a Catholic in the slaveholding, predominantly Protestant South. In the editors introduction (Miller) and afterword (Wakelyn), they provide an incisive overview of a heretofore neglected field.
