"The Feud" had its beginnings more than twenty years in the past when Guy Dymond caught Galt Majors in bed with Guy's full-blood Indian wife, and wounded him. Since then, Majors has become wealthy, while Guy has lived in borderline poverty. After Preston Majors, Galt's son, impregnates Guy Dymond's mixed-blood daughter, it acts as a spur, renewing the feud. It is a matter that ultimately can only be settled one way, with violence. In "Cañon Creek," rancher Frank Shasta finds a dead cow on Glen Hocking's range, but he does not know what killed it. In town, the veterinarian concludes that the cow died of anthrax. This means that Hocking will have to inoculate all of his cattle against the dread disease, and destroy those that are already infected. Hocking believes it is a scheme by the vet to make money. It will take force, generated by the other ranchers, to get Hocking to change his mind.
