Excerpt from Burhans Genealogy: Descendants From the First Ancestor in America, Jacob Burhans, 1660, and His Son, Jan Burhans, 1663, to 1893My first thought when I finally decided to turn my collections into some permanent form, was to embrace all the descendants of Jacob Burhans, the first-known ancestor in America, - but soon found that such an undertaking would be beyond the scope of one work. This genealogy therefore con fines itself to the descendants of the seven sons of Jan Burhans, giving the records of his daughters only through the fifth generation. These daughters married so early that to carry them down would necessitate almost complete genealogies of the Du Bois, the Whitaker, and the Ploeg families, and would belong more appropriately to works under those names.It is a cause of much regret to me that I have been unable to ascertain what became of the descendants of Peter Burhans and Debora Ostrander. I have a strong conviction that some must still be living, although an exten sive correspondence with Burhans kinsmen in all parts of the country has failed to discover them.
