The novel depicts the lives of a number of French characters throughout the century, which includes the Napoleonic wars, and presents the nature of good, evil and law in a captivating story that shows the landmarks of Paris: morals, philosophy, law, justice, religion, the nature of romance and family love, Victor Hugo was inspired by the character of the police criminal François Vidoc. But he made that character two characters in his novel.
