Bob and Sue Miller grew up in a small Amish community in Sugarcreek, Ohio. Christian teaching and good home cooking were part of their upbringing, a heritage which continued when they established their own home. Twenty-seven years ago, the Millers purchased property on U.S. 20 in Middlebury, Indiana. Back then it was a 24-hour truck stop named Everett's Highway Inn. But the Millers saw other possibilities. After renovation, the restaurant reopened on January 1, 1971 as Das Dutchman Essenhaus, a six-day Amish restaurant, complete with Amish and Mennonite cooks and wait-staff.
