American Retrospectives

In American Retrospectives Stanley Kutler brings together a broad and diverse group of scholars to examine the impact of important books and historians upon American historiography and American historical thinking. Ranging from the 1930s to the 1970s, the authors discuss such now-classic works of history as Arthur Schlesinger Jr.'s Age of Jackson, Richard Hofstadter's The Age of Reform, and Frederick Lewis Allen's Only Yesterday. Included are chapters on women's history; African-American history; political, social, and economic history; and history written for scholars as well as history written for a larger audience.
