It is believed that basil was first cultivated in India four thousand years ago. As it was considered a sacred herb, basil was offered to the deities Vishnu and Krishna. It then became popular in Asia and Egypt, where it was used in the mummification process, after it was discovered to have antibacterial and conservation properties. It then arrived in Greece and Rome where it was a royal herb and a symbol of fertility. It was used as both a herb and an ornamental plant. The name basil" comes from the Greek basilikos", meaning royal. The princesses of Byzantium gave it this name for its beauty and its flavour. It was then in the Mediterranean basin where the herb started to be used in cooking.
