Книга «Что делать?» политического заключенного Н. Чернышевского (1828—1889 ) появилась в одиночной камере Алексеевского равелина Петропавловской крепости. Чудесным образом это сочинение прошло цензуру благодаря завязке, подобной заправским авантюрным романам и описанию семейной драмы...
Однако сразу после публикации было строжайше запрещено как опаснейшее для государственных устоев произведение. В результате распространялось в списках и вызвало великое брожение в умах. Ни одна русская книга до этой не вызывала такого резонанса. Автору удалось убедительно, в соответствии с веяниями эпохи, ответить на извечный русский вопрос: «Что делать?»
