В зависимости от температуры двигателя термостат заставляет охлаждающую жидкость циркулировать по большому, либо по маленькому кругу. При повышении температуры он начинает открываться и направляет часть охлаждающей жидкости по большому кругу, степень открытия напрямую зависит от температуры. Как правило, одной из основных причин выхода термостата из строя является деформация центрального штока и резиновых уплотнителей вследствие воздействия агрессивной среды. Неисправный термостат не ремонтируется, а просто заменяется на новый.
