В книге, подготовленной доктором филологических наук О. Л. Фетисенко, впервые публикуется забытый историко-литературный памятник: переписка выдающегося педагога, основателя русской церковно-народной школы Сергея Александровича Рачинского (1833–1902) с прозаиком, драматургом, теоретиком народного театра Иваном Леонтьевичем Леонтьевым (1856–1911), писавшим под псевдонимом «Иван Щеглов», в наши дни известным по большей части как приятель А. П. Чехова. В очередном томе серии «Русские беседы» перед читателем предстает парадоксальный диалог петербургского литератора-неврастеника и умиротворенного сельского отшельника о русской словесности, о столице и провинции, о духовном состоянии человека конца XIX века. Приложение к книге составили посвященные Рачинскому фрагменты неизданного дневника Щеглова и его статья о педагоге. Издание сопровождают вступительная статья, подробные комментарии и аннотированный указатель имен.
