The present book considers the basic components of the river channel research as a scientific discipline concerned with investigations of the river channels and their evolution under various natural conditions. Volume 1 analyses mechanisms and morphological expressions of the river channel processes, factors and conditions controlling river channel formation and development. Approaches to distinguishing types of river channel processes, morphodynamic classification of river channels (channel morphological patterns), types of channel deformations and hierarchical structure of channel morphology are described and explained in details. Selection of main criteria applicable for characterization of river channel development is considered. Specifics of river channel evolution under conditions of directed trend of vertical channel deformations is analyzed.
