Текст сопровождается иллюстрациями Ивана Яковлевича Билибина выдающегося русского графика-иллюстратора, театрального художника-декоратора. Билибинский стиль книжной иллюстрации родился благодаря Экспедиции заготовления государственных бумаг (ЭЗГБ), которую в конце XIX столетия возглавлял академик, князь Борис Борисович Голицын. Придя на должность управляющего Экспедицией, князь Голицын поставил целью своей работы создать учреждение,& 171;которое должно служить примером подражания для всей бумажной и печатной промышленности России и способствовать культурно-эстетическому развитию народа& 187;.Осенью 1899 года Иван Билибин предложил в ЭЗГБ свои рисунки к трем русским сказкам. Князь Голицын высоко оценил работы молодого художника и впоследствии заказывал у него иллюстрации для оформления русских народных сказок и произведений Александра Пушкина.
