Мы открываем сборник теоретической статьей доктора искусствоведения священника Стефана Ванеяна, который публикует один из разделов своей книги о крупном немецком философе и эстетике Лютцелере. Речь идет о проблемах иконографии, причем подробно рассматривается вопрос о соотношении иконографического и собственно художественного в произведении искусства. Показывается, что здесь существует много неясного, иконографическое и художественное могут не совпадать, с чем нельзя не согласиться. Безусловно, такая постановка вопроса актуальна для современного православного искусства в России, где, к сожалению, мы часто наблюдаем именно подмену художественного — иконографическим, хотя в больших, общих рамках, с точки зрения культурно-исторической типологии, иконография может рассматриваться как признак стиля.
