Издание знакомит с иконографией Святого Николая Чудотворца в произведениях древнерусского искусства из фондов Русского музея. Включает статьи, посвященные образу этого святого в художественной, литургической, погребальной и иконографической традициях и письменности Древней Руси, иллюстрированный каталог. Отдельные статьи посвящены Никольским храмам Древней Руси и иконам Святого Николая в храмах Санкт-Петербурга. Особенностью издания является комплексный подход к освещению темы, что отражено в структуре каталога, включающего пять разделов: Иконопись, Произведения шитья, Мелкая пластика, Металлопластика, Иконописные прориси. В каталог вошли лучшие произведения XII-XIX веков из фондов музея. Все воспроизведенные экспонаты снабжены развернутыми аннотациями со схемами порядка клейм на полях икон и научным аппаратом.
