Он ставит цель доказать эту причину на основании несомненных фактов, используя все лучшие русские и иностранные сочинения, относящиеся к этой войне; официальные донесения о военных действиях; записки – как изданные, так и остающиеся в рукописях; словесные показания многих лиц, принимавших деятельное участие в изложенных событиях. К сочинению прилагаются карты и планы.
