Alfalfa hay (Medicago Sativa L.) has the same high fibre content as other hays, but is richer in proteins (16%) and calcium (1,5%). It is therefore especially suitable for young animals that are being weaned or in the growth stage, when a more substantial diet is required. It is also useful for sick animals or those in convalescence, because the strong taste of alfalfa stimulates the appetite. However, when the animal reaches the adult stage or has ended its convalescence, it is best to replace the alfalfa or integrate it with normal hay.
