Dodie Smith became an overnight sensation with her first play, AUTUMN CROCUS, in 1931. With the sell-out of DEAR OCTOPUS in 1938, she became the most successful female dramatist of her generation, but then left England to spend the war in California, with her pacifist husband, Alec Beesley.
