The insert has a slight taper and small fins around which the plastic can flow creating a very strong bond. Instead of tweaking your design around the constraints of 3D printing (supports print bed size etc.) separate your parts into individual components that are held in place using these inserts and machine screws. Not only does this give you more flexibility when designing parts but it also allows you to reprint only failed components rather than complete assemblies - saving time and money. These are 1/4-20 thread which is the correct size for most camera tripods. Height/OAL is 0.3 *approximately* recommended hole size is 0.363 tapering to 0.349 . The depth should be approximately 0.030 greater than the OAL of the insert.
