A Medieval Italian Commune: Siena Under the Nine, 1287-1355

Working largely from unpublished archival sources, Professor Bowsky has combined thoroughness and penetration of a rare order to produce this first modern study of Siena under the Nine. Addressing the major issues and problems in late medieval and early renaissance Italian communal history, the work probes relations between the nobility and the lower orders and between city and contado; explores communal fiscal, guild, reprisal, and provisioning policies; and examines administrative innovation, urban religiosity, and the nature of a communal civic ideal.
